FX Markup
An extra percentage added on top of the exchange rate when a card spends in a currency other than its base.
Last updated:
A foreign-exchange (FX) markup is a hidden fee many bank and travel cards add when you spend abroad — typically 1–3% above the real exchange rate.
Because stablecoin-funded crypto cards settle from a dollar-pegged balance, they can avoid or minimise FX markups, which is a major reason travellers and remote workers use them.
