Credit, debit and prepaid always sit on separate ranges. The split matters at checkout, because processors apply different interchange and different acceptance rules to each.

All Visa ranges begin with 4, so the second digit is what separates them. These are the two-digit openings most common in the directory.

How Visa numbering works
Visa's allocation is the simplest of the major networks. Every card begins with 4, and the digits that follow identify the issuer, the country, the currency and the product. There are no separate blocks to memorise the way there are for Mastercard or Amex.
The first six to eight digits form the BIN. Visa, like the other networks, has moved to eight-digit issuer identification to expand the pool of available numbers, but six-digit lookups still resolve correctly for the overwhelming majority of ranges in use.
- Leading digit — always 4, with no exceptions across any Visa product.
- Length — typically 16 digits; 13 and 19-digit ranges exist but are uncommon.
- Check digit — the final digit validates the number using the Luhn algorithm.
- Tier — Signature, Infinite and Business products sit on their own dedicated ranges.
Why issuers split Visa products across ranges
Separating products onto distinct ranges is an operational necessity rather than a preference. Interchange is set per product type, so credit and debit have to be distinguishable before authorisation. Risk rules differ too: a prepaid range carries a different fraud profile from a premium credit range and is scored accordingly.
It also makes cards portable across borders in a predictable way. Because currency and country are attached to the range, a processor in another market can price and route the transaction correctly without knowing anything else about the cardholder.
Methodology
Distribution figures are computed automatically from the 19 Visa ranges within Kripicard's curated directory of 33 publicly documented issuer ranges. This is a reference sample chosen for documentation quality, not a proportional sample of Visa's global BIN allocation, so the percentages describe this dataset rather than the worldwide Visa portfolio. The numbering rules described on this page are fixed Visa standards and apply universally. Single-card lookups in the Kripicard BIN tool query a live database at request time.
Frequently asked questions
What number do all Visa cards start with?
Every Visa card number begins with the digit 4. Visa numbers are normally 16 digits long, though some legacy ranges use 13 or 19. No other network is allocated the leading digit 4, so it is a reliable way to identify a Visa card instantly.
How are Visa BINs distributed between credit and debit?
Across the 19 Visa ranges tracked in Kripicard's directory, credit accounts for 63.2%, debit accounts for 36.8%. Issuers keep credit and debit on separate ranges because the two carry different interchange rates and authorisation rules.
What is a Visa Signature or Visa Infinite BIN?
Signature and Infinite are premium Visa product tiers with higher spending limits and additional benefits. They are issued on their own dedicated BIN ranges so that merchants and processors can recognise the tier — and the higher interchange it carries — from the card number alone.
Can you tell a Visa debit card from a credit card by its BIN?
Yes. The funding type is part of the BIN record, so a lookup returns credit, debit or prepaid. Merchants use exactly this data to apply surcharges, block prepaid cards, or route debit transactions differently.
Are Visa prepaid and virtual cards on different BINs?
Yes. Prepaid programmes, including most virtual cards, run on dedicated ranges flagged as prepaid. This is why a small number of merchants that refuse prepaid products decline virtual cards even though the number is a perfectly valid Visa.
Does Kripicard issue on Visa BINs?
Yes. Kripicard virtual cards are issued on Visa and Mastercard BINs through licensed issuing partners, so they work at any merchant that accepts those networks online.
