How to read an issuer ranking

A BIN ranking measures numbering ranges, not market share. Card networks assign issuers blocks of numbers, and each issuer decides how finely to divide those blocks across its product line. A bank with five ranges has simply chosen to separate its products more granularly than a bank running everything on one.

That still makes the ranking useful. The number of ranges an issuer holds is a good proxy for how many distinct card products it runs, and the country and currency attached to each range tells you where that product is designed to be used.

  • More ranges usually means more distinct products, not more cardholders.
  • Ranges are tied to a single country and currency, which is why global banks appear in several markets.
  • Premium tiers such as Signature and Infinite are almost always issued on their own dedicated ranges.

Why issuer BINs matter for online payments

When you pay online, the merchant's payment processor reads the BIN before the transaction is authorised. It uses those digits to work out which network to route through, which country the card belongs to, whether the card is credit, debit or prepaid, and what interchange applies.

That is why the same purchase can be accepted on one card and declined on another. Merchants that block prepaid cards, or restrict payments to domestic issuers, are making that decision from the BIN alone — before the card number is even fully validated.

Methodology

Figures are computed automatically from Kripicard's curated BIN directory, which currently holds 33 publicly documented issuer ranges across 7 countries, of which 19 are Visa. This is a reference sample of well-documented ranges, not a census of every Visa BIN in circulation, so it should be read as a structural view of how issuers organise their ranges rather than a measure of global market share. Single-card lookups in the Kripicard BIN tool query a live database at request time.

Frequently asked questions

Who is the largest Visa issuer?

In Kripicard's directory, Barclays holds the most documented Visa BIN ranges with 2 of the 19 Visa records tracked. Globally, the largest Visa issuers by cards in circulation are generally the biggest retail banks in each market — the ranking here reflects documented BIN ranges, not total cards issued.

Does having more BINs mean a bank issues more cards?

Not directly. A BIN is a numbering range, not a card count. A bank can issue millions of cards on a single BIN, or split a smaller portfolio across many BINs to separate products, regions or business lines. BIN counts show how a bank organises its portfolio, not its size.

Why do issuers hold multiple Visa BINs?

Issuers separate BINs by product tier (Signature, Infinite), by funding type (credit, debit, prepaid), by currency and by market. Splitting BINs makes it easier to apply different interchange rates, risk rules and authorisation logic to each product.

How do I tell which bank issued a Visa card?

The first six to eight digits identify the issuer. Enter them in the Kripicard BIN lookup and it will return the issuing bank, country, currency, card type and product tier where that data is published.

Do all Visa cards start with 4?

Yes. Every Visa card number begins with the digit 4, and Visa numbers are typically 16 digits (some legacy ranges use 13 or 19). That single leading digit is the fastest way to identify a Visa card before any lookup.

Can a Kripicard virtual card be issued on a Visa BIN?

Yes. Kripicard virtual cards are issued on Visa and Mastercard BINs through licensed issuing partners, so they are accepted anywhere those networks are accepted online.
