Find out what paying in other currencies really costs over a year. Enter what you spend abroad or with foreign online merchants, then compare cards by FX markup and per-purchase fee. It also prices the trap most people fall into: saying yes when a terminal or checkout offers to charge you in your own currency.
Spending in any currency other than your card's billing currency, expressed in your home currency. That includes online purchases from foreign merchants, not just travel.
Edit any markup or fee to match your own card's terms — they are printed in its fee schedule as a foreign transaction or currency conversion fee.
The DCC slice costs the same on every card, because the merchant does the conversion instead of your card. That is why even a 0% markup card still shows a cost when DCC is above zero — declining the offer and paying in the local currency is the fix. Figures exclude top-up, issuance and ATM fees.
A percentage your card issuer adds when you pay in a currency other than the card's billing currency. Many bank cards charge around 2.75–3%. It is charged on top of the network's exchange rate and is often not shown at checkout, only on your statement.
Yes. It depends on the currency and often the merchant's location, not on where you are. Buying from a foreign app store, ad platform or SaaS company from home can trigger it as easily as paying in a shop abroad.
When a terminal, ATM or checkout offers to charge you in your home currency instead of the local one. The merchant's provider then sets the rate, typically 3–8% worse than the card network rate. Choosing the local currency almost always works out cheaper, even on a card with a markup.
Because of the DCC share. When you accept merchant conversion, your card is charged in your own currency and its markup never applies; the cost is set by the merchant. Set the DCC share to 0% to see your card's cost on its own.
Kripicard virtual cards, on Visa or Mastercard, add no FX markup: foreign purchases convert at the network rate. Top-up and card fees are separate and are not included in this calculator.
